On 14 February 2013, Switzerland and the United States signed an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) known as the FATCA Agreement, which implements the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).This Act was adopted unilaterally by the United States and applies worldwide.Its purpose is to ensure that accounts held abroad by U.S. taxpayers can be identified by the United States.Under FATCA, foreign financial institutions (FFI) are required to report information on U.S. accounts to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or deduct a substantial withholding tax (for more information, please see the Swiss federal government website).
As a participating FFI within the meaning of the FATCA model 2 IGA signed between the USA and Switzerland on 14 February 2013, BanqueCantonaleVaudoise (BCV) will comply with its reporting requirements under FFI Reporting Model 2.
